Olympics

Sports are very popular in many countries. That’s why the Olympic Games are so great! They involve all countries across the world to participate in them. Particularly 206 countries. The Olympics is a huge sporting event that happens every 4 years.

The Olympic games took place starting in ancient Greece and were banned in 393 AD. In 1896, the games were brought back by Pierre de Coubertin with the help of the International Olympic Committee. They took place in Athens, Greece. During this time, the winter games did not exist. It wasn’t until 1924 that the winter games were introduced. The 5 ring symbol that the Olympics uses represents all the major regions in the world. They are Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, and Oceania. The colors of the rings represent all the colors of the nation’s flags that compete in the games.

There are the winter and the summer olympics. This year the summer olympics were postponed due to Covid-19. Instead of being cancelled it has been postponed to a later date for the first time ever. It is now set to take place from Friday, July 23, 2021 to Sunday, August 8, 2021 in Tokyo, Japan.

There are many sports that are played in the summer Olympic Games. There is swimming, water polo, diving, volleyball, fencing, gymnastics, equestrian, hockey, tennis, basketball and a long list of other sports. Did you know there are some new sports that are going to be added to the 2021 games? The new games include surfing, karate, skateboarding and sport climbing. Some of my personal favorites are volleyball, beach volleyball, gymnastics, and water polo. I find them all so entertaining to watch. I wish I could play like they all do!

Do you have a favorite Olympic sport? How about a least favorite?
