Founded in 1868 as a croquet club, the AELTC quickly embraced the new sport of lawn tennis, staging its first Gentlemen’s Championship in 1877. Originally based on Worple Road, the club moved to its current site on Church Road in 1922, where it has since become the world’s most prestigious tennis venue and home of The Championships, Wimbledon.
The club today spans more than 42 acres, featuring 18 championship grass courts, multiple practice courts, and indoor and clay surfaces. Centre Court and No.1 Court both boast retractable roofs, ensuring play continues regardless of weather. Membership remains highly exclusive, with a limited number of full members, honorary memberships for past champions, and debenture ticket holders who enjoy premium seating and facilities.
